Gheringhap Street Drain Upgrade Project Update – 18 March 2019

The waterfront site of the Gheringhap St Drain Upgrade project has been set up with safety fencing in the north west section of the skate park in place and machinery on site. Preparation for tunnelling at the Mercer Street site has commenced.
The new 450m long drain, to be built along Gheringhap Street to a new outfall into Corio Bay, will greatly reduce the frequency of flooding and the length of time surface flood waters impact the CBD, benefitting local businesses, residents, visitors and developers.
The major drain will be constructed using high-tech ‘micro-tunnelling’, a technique never before seen in Geelong. This method provides the greatest cost-benefit, shortest duration and the least amount of disruption to the local community. During the construction period, traffic management plans will be in place to minimise the impact on road, cycle and pedestrian users in the area.

PARKING IN CENTRAL GEELONG – HAVE YOUR SAY

Central Geelong is growing and evolving, and the way people travel to and within the city needs to change too.
For the next 100 days, we are seeking community views on transport and parking options within the central Geelong precinct via an [url link=”https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4745703/Parking-in-Central-Geelong” text=”online survey”]

Whether you are a resident, commuter, trader, shopper, business owner or visitor to central Geelong, we want to hear from you!

This consultation follows the release of a [url link=”https://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/common/public/documents/yoursay/8d6659619bff79e-181207CGParkingDiscussionPaperFINAL.pdf” text=”discussion paper”] exploring the present and future parking needs in the central Geelong precinct. With almost nine in ten commuters currently travelling to central Geelong by car, as well as rapid population growth throughout the Greater Geelong region, it is critical we get the balance right to create a healthy, vibrant and accessible city for all of us to enjoy.

There will also be opportunities for the community to provide feedback at a number of public events and locations throughout the Greater Geelong region between now and 3 April 2019, which will ensure that holiday makers and visitors get to have their say too. This will include AFL fans attending the first Geelong Cats home game against Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday 30 March 2019.

Following this intensive consultation period, the City of Greater Geelong will review public feedback and develop a draft Central Geelong Car Parking Strategy, which will be released for further consultation in 2019.

You can keep up-to-date with the latest projects in the central Geelong precinct by following us on Facebook.

The Gee-Longest Kick on the Green Spine

Football player in green spine.

Stage one of the Green Spine on Malop Street, between Moorabool Street and Yarra Street, has been transformed and now we are celebrating with a street festival on Sunday, 12 August 2018 – with an AFL kicking competition as the main event. TheGee-Longest Kick on the Green Spine is designed to find out which man and woman has the biggest kick in Greater Geelong. Open to one senior male and female representative per registered AFL Barwon football club and the Cats AFL and VFL teams, the event will see footballs kicked down the middle of Malop Street. Footballs will be kicked from artificial turf on the crossing between Market Square and Westfield. The winning club will receive $500 and the winning player will receive a trophy

This celebration event, which also includes an AFL clinic for kids, street performers, musicians, bike riding stunts, and bicycle maintenance workshops, will be held from 11.30am to 1.30pm.
Malop Street, between Moorabool and Yarra Streets will be closed to traffic for the event.

Artwork adds more colour to the Green Spine

revitalising

The colour and dynamic energy of the cycling peloton is coming to Malop Street’s Green Spine with an exciting new art installation to be added this week. Titled Peloton, the artwork pays homage to Geelong’s great cycling connections, especially our Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and represents a peloton in full flight. Strategically positioned along the botanic walk, the installation is a vibrant and engaging artwork by local artist Don Walters. The work has a natural connection to the Green Spine, featuring large steel fans which are brightly coloured and have a botanic nature. The work also highlights the Green Spine as a pedestrian and bike-oriented environment, providing a rich splash of colour which animates the space throughout the seasons. As the artwork is installed, the Green Spine project is on track to be completed by the end of June. Final works are underway, including the asphalting the new road, finalising paving, installation of street furniture and new plantings. Learn more by visiting Revitalising Central Geelong.

Councillor Peter Murrihy – Acting Mayor
“This colourful artwork will be an important focal point for the work we have done to transform Malop Street into a vibrant street and linear park. It will add another dimension to the streetscape, further enhancing the Green Spine as an attractive and inviting place to relax, meet friends, shop, eat and linger.”

Don Walters – artist
“It is a great time to be an artist in Geelong with so much vitality and energy in the city. The Peloton is a visually complex and physically interactive sculpture for an active and equally dynamic public space in central Geelong.”
