The Central Geelong Arts and Cultural Precinct Masterplan that will deliver a reimagined Little Malop Street with a focus on arts and cultural activity.
The Revitalising Central Geelong Action Plan’s Smart City initiative proposes a stronger connection between cultural facilities in Central Geelong. The Arts and Culture Precinct study area incorporates Little Malop Street, from Fenwick Street to Gheringhap Street.
The masterplan considers key issues and opportunities for the precinct including a range of streetscape treatments and improved pedestrian and cycling amenities along this stretch of the CBD.
The masterplan will provide: a shared zone in Little Malop Street between Fenwick Street and Gheringhap Street with capacity to be closed to vehicles for events; additional trees, furniture, paving and artworks; a re-designed garden on the southern side of City Hall; new pedestrian prioritised linkages through Police Lane and a realigned Aitchison Place.
The masterplan has been developed to complement other projects in nearby precincts, including the Green Spine, the Laneways Project and the Johnstone Park Raingarden.
The next stage of the process is to prepare detailed design and costings for the streetscape redevelopment which will be funded by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).
